All about Owl Education

My approach to working with clients emphasizes unconditional positive regard, self-regulation, and empowerment.  Owl Education sessions are one hour long and held one-on-one in my office in VicWest (Victoria, BC) or virtually via Skype or Zoom

My approach combines counselling and tutoring in a manner customized to the unique needs of each client

THE OWL EDUCATION COUNSELLING APPROACH

is informed by years of research, study and practice.  It is eclectic, drawing on several types of therapy such as Person-Centred Therapy and Positive Psychology:

  • I show unconditional positive regard and allow the client’s inherent drive towards, and capacity for growth to direct the therapeutic process

  • I help clients identify and use their unique interests and strengths as tools to aid in reaching desired goals 

  • I support clients in sharing and understanding their own stories, an empowering process that can promote adaptive change

  • I support clients in fostering self-compassion and reframing negative self-talk

  • I love using art-making and therapeutic cards, such as Oh Cards and Soul Cards, with clients when appropriate. Both tools act as stimuli for an exploration of unexamined/deep aspects of experience

THE OWL EDUCATION TUTORING APPROACH

emphasizes self-regulation, successes, autonomy and has been developed through years of study as well as decades of experience as a researcher, teacher and tutor.  It relies on models of learning such as self-regulated learning and educational theories such as self-determination theory:

  • I help students learn how to learn through, for instance, metacognition (thinking about their thinking), and strategic action (goal-setting, planning, tracking and evaluating progress) 

  • I adapt sessions to students’ unique needs

  • I highlight successes - I believe that successes build on successes

  • In line with self-determination theory, I work to foster students’ needs for autonomy, belonging and competence. I believe that when these needs are met, students’  motivation for learning is optimised
